Discover the Family Behind Encasa

Nestled in the heart of Sydney’s dynamic culinary scene, Encasa is a beloved destination for authentic Spanish flavours. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Pachi Rodriguez and Maria Barona, Encasa’s journey is deeply rooted in tradition, passion, and the rich history of its owners.

Pachi’s journey in hospitality began in the 1990s in Las Palmas, Spain. After moving to Sydney in 1999, he completed his TAFE Commercial Cookery course and started honing his skills. Maria arrived in Sydney from Colombia in 2001 to study Economics at the University of Sydney. It was while working at Spanish Terrazas on Kent Street in 2002 that she met Pachi, sparking not just a personal connection but a shared dream of bringing the flavours of Spain to Australia.

In 2005, Pachi and Maria married, and together they built a life centred around their three children: Sebastian, Sophia, and Nicholas. Their culinary journey took a pivotal turn in 2008 when they took over Encasa, a Spanish restaurant originally known as Casa Juanita, established on Pitt Street in the 1980s. Under the previous owners, Heike and Antonio, the restaurant was renamed Encasa, meaning “at home,” just in time for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Since taking the reins in 2008, Pachi and Maria have worked tirelessly to maintain Encasa’s reputation for quality and authenticity. They’ve expanded their brand beyond the original restaurant, opening a deli on Bathurst Street from 2011 to 2017, where they introduced Sydney’s lunch scene to their now-famous bocadillos. Their success led them to open additional venues in food courts, including Westfield and Chifley, further cementing their place in Sydney’s food landscape.

In 2016, they brought Encasa to Lane Cove, an area close to their home, filling a gap in the local market for authentic Spanish cuisine. Lane Cove offers a fully Spanish dining experience, focusing on traditional tapas and dishes, without the pizza and pasta offerings that were previously served on Pitt Street.

Encasa’s Unique Charm

Encasa’s commitment to serving genuine Spanish cuisine is evident in every dish. Pachi and Maria have created a menu that reflects their roots, with recipes passed down through generations. Dishes like pork-and-beef meatballs in Pachi’s mother’s tomato sauce, or calamari with squid-ink aioli, transport diners to Spain with each bite. Their dedication to quality and tradition has made Encasa a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
